while(scenes)
Despite ongoing contemporary discourses, the core of modernity—shaped in the 19th century—remains largely intact and unaffected. This modernity culminates in what philosopher Alexandre Kojève described as The End of History. According to Kojève’s reading of Hegel, history progresses through ideological struggles and contradictions, ultimately resolving into a state where these struggles cease
With the death of spirituality, we now encounter a continuous interplay of anti-theories and counter-movements, forming a state of perfect balance—akin to zero. Rather than producing new ideological breakthroughs, these contradictions neutralize one another. This equilibrium signifies that no ultimate truth or authority can emerge to provide resolution. The vertical hierarchy of history has flattened, leaving a space where movement persists without progress, and returning to the ancient regime is is also not the solution.
“while” is my ongoing video-art project that responds to this state of endless repetition by teasing the notion of progress, deconstructing reality and narration, and adopting the identity and theories of modernism within a contemporary digital medium. The project draws on the programming concept of the while loop, in which an action or sequence is repeated indefinitely until a condition is met—though here, no resolution or termination condition exists. Through animated loops, such as while(steps) and while(scenes), I explore a world trapped in stasis.
